Welcome to the Leadership Initiative

Introduction

The office of Student Organizations & Leadership welcomes you to the Leadership Initiative (LI). All Sacramento State students are capable of learning and developing their leadership “tool-kit” in order to positively affect their personal, educational and professional development and create change in their community. To that end, our office is proud to launch the Leadership Initiative for the Fall 2010 semester.

The Leadership Initiative is a co-curricular opportunity for students to engage in experiential and educational campus activities as well as expand their leadership development through an intentionally structured, yet flexible, goal oriented program. Participation in the Leadership Initiative will add meaning and value to a student’s co-curricular involvement, personal and professional development and result in increased retention and persistence.

Leadership Certificates Overview

Green Certificate – 1st Semester
Summary: Designed for the first semester Leadership Initiative participant, this Green Certificate provides an introduction to leadership and student development theory complemented by one event from each of the approved Leadership Initiative categories.

Gold Certificate – 2nd Semester (Prerequisite Green Certificate)
Summary: Designed for the second semester of Leadership Initiative participant, this Gold Certificate focuses on developing the reflective skills essential for continuous interior transformational change. It also maintains the foundational participation in the approved Leadership Initiative events.

Hornet Pride Certificate – 3rd Semester (Prerequisite Gold Certificate)
Summary: Designed for the third semester of Leadership Initiative participant, this Hornet Pride Certificate fosters a proactive leader emphasizing leadership as more than an individual approach. This certificate integrates greater personal accountability through the creation of a leadership development plan and active involvement with a student organization and fostering skills in collaboration and community building.

Leadership Initiative Mentor Certificate – 4th Semester (Prerequisite Hornet Pride Certificate)
Summary: Designed for the fourth semester of Leadership Initiative participant. This Leadership Initiative Mentor Certificate emphasizes leadership as mentorship because aspiring leaders need role models and guidance. This certificate includes mentorship and workshop facilitation components as well as aiding in abstract leadership analysis and enhancing communication and conflict management skills. Additionally, it aides the student in transferring past leadership experiences into marketable career skills through the development of the co-curricular transcript.

Six Leadership Initiative Categories:

Appreciating Diversity - An event, club, or program that allows students to learn about people of various cultures, genders, backgrounds and experiences
Campus Life - An event or group that contributes to the overall sense of campus involvement and pride.
Leadership - A program, class, workshop, conference, club experience or employment opportunity that contributes to a student's leadership skill development
Professional Development – an event or workshop that provides training and educational opportunities that lead to personal and career skills development
Service - A class, community service organization or event, volunteer opportunity, or series of events/opportunities
Wellness - An event or program that promotes state of wellbeing in body, mind and spirit.
